The Washoe County Food Policy Council (WCFPC) was formed in October 2011. The Council’s formation arose from a 2010 Community Action Plan (CAP) created under a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Through careful examination of community data, there was an observed need for policies and plans to address the lack of specific food policy and vision in Washoe County. The WCFPC is currently made up of 10 to 12 council members who each represent sectors of our region’s food system. There are representatives from: food production, public food programs, community planning, food distribution, food preparation, data analysis and consumers.
The WCFPC seeks to enhance the current food system in Washoe County by addressing the community’s needs and building on its strengths. The Washoe County Food Policy Council is charged with implementing the goals of the Washoe County Food Plan (Access to Health Food in Washoe County: A Framework for Food System Design) and to work towards reducing barriers so that all residents have access to healthy food.
